After finishing high school, Persson went to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. There, he studied a mix of subjects including Sociology, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Political Science and Government, and Communications. He got his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1998. Later, he attended the Georgetown University Law Center and earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2001. Persson says he paid for his schooling by winning money playing poker.

Before founding Maverick Gaming, Persson worked as a Senior Vice President at Las Vegas Sands Corporation and as President and COO of Azure Gaming. He learned valuable lessons from successful billionaires he worked with, like Sheldon Adelson and Michael Gaughan.

In December 2017, Persson and his business partner Justin Beltram started Maverick Gaming by buying their first casinos in West Wendover, NV. Since then, Maverick has been acquiring more casinos, mostly small to medium-sized ones. As of April 2023, they own 31 gaming properties in Nevada, Colorado, and Washington.
