The 2023 Virginia Plane Crash

On June 4, 2023, a privately operated Cessna 560 Citation V carrying three passengers and a pilot crashed in the George Washington National Forest, Virginia. The incident occurred at approximately 3:23 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), resulting in the loss of all occupants aboard the aircraft.

The plane that crashed was a Cessna 560 Citation V, with the registration N611VG, owned by Encore Motors of Melbourne. This company is based in Florida and owned by John and Barbara Rumpel.

About 15 minutes after takeoff, air traffic control instructed the pilot to maintain an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,449 meters).  Unfortunately, the pilot did not respond. The plane continued climbing to a cruising altitude of 34,000 feet (10,363 meters), seemingly on course for MacArthur Airport.

After reaching Long Island, the aircraft followed the correct flight path for runway alignment but it failed to initiate descent. Instead, it maintained altitude and continued past the airport. And Eventually, it entered the no-fly zone over Washington, D.C. The U.S. Capitol complex was placed on “elevated alert” as the plane flew over restricted airspace. 

F-16 fighter jets were deployed to intercept the Cessna. Despite their efforts, the unresponsive plane continued flying past Washington, D.C., and entered Virginia. It crashed into the mountainous terrain near Mine Bank Mountain in the George Washington National Forest, at an elevation of 2,760 feet (840 meters). The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are actively investigating the crash. As of August 2023, the exact cause of the plane’s unresponsiveness remains unknown
