Keith Douglas Sweat was born on July 22, 1961, in Harlem, New York City, to Juanita Thompson and Charles Sweat. His father worked in a factory, while his mother was a hairdresser.

After his father's passing in 1973, Keith, along with his four siblings, was raised by his mother. To support his family, he took up a job as a night stock boy at Macy’s Department Store while attending City College.
